Job Description

The Medical Records Technician (Coding) will provide full-time medical records coding services under the Performance Work Statement (PWS) for the Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System. Responsibilities include performing accurate, compliant coding of inpatient and outpatient encounters, reviewing clinical documentation, validating code selections, and supporting data integrity.

Technicians must ensure coding accuracy and adherence to national standards, including CMS, AMA CPT, ICD‑10‑CM/PCS guidelines, and all applicable VHA/VA policies and credentialing requirements (e.g., CPC, CCS, CCS‑P). Coders must meet established VA productivity and quality benchmarks, participate in audit activities when required, and demonstrate strong multi-specialty expertise. Inpatient Coding experience is mandatory, with the ability to also code outpatient stays as needed.

  • Required Certifications: CCS, RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CCS-P
  • Experience:
    • Hospital Inpatient Coding experience (required)
    • Multi-specialty coding proficiency
    • Proficiency in ICD‑10‑CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS
  • Knowledge of CMS, AMA CPT, ICD‑10‑CM/PCS, and VHA/VA compliance standards
  • Ability to review clinical documentation and resolve discrepancies
  • Experience with electronic health records; VA systems preferred
  • Must pass all VHA background investigations and credentialing
  • References Required:Provide three (3) references from recent employment.
    • One reference must be within the past 1 year
    • Include organization name/address, title, Period of Performance, brief description of duties, and HR/manager contact info (name/title/phone/email)
    • Federal, state, local, or commercial references accepted
    • Lack of past performance is not considered favorable or unfavorable
